Grand Marais restaurant writer and critic

There are places I call home.  Every time I walk into the Gun Flint Tavern on the Lake, it feels like home.  Not just a special place in my heart, the "feeling" that Grand Marais and Honolulu is my home is intimately connected to my ties to a particular restaurant.  Enough sappy.  I could mention the Gun Flint Taverns neighborhood atmosphere, friendly service, the expertly chosen wine list created by the owners,  (do I smell a Beard Foundation nomination)  but, at the end of the day it's about the food.  The ever- changing soups, the ahi presentation, the to die for tamales, the team work between prep and kitchen is genius.  Some of their dishes are so yummy that I didn't want to swallow.  GFT delivers... every, single, time.

A good server is attentive with a "customer is always right" attitude.

A great server can read his tables and know the vibe.

An exceptional server has a killer sense of humor, but never offensive, and can read his tables perfectly.

Coming later, if you're in a hurry or not, why the Dockside could sometimes be better than the Angry Trout.   And, lets explore why it's taking so long for Grand Marais to offer a real southern down home barbeque fire pit grill, can you say, yea baby.
